There’s nothing worse than jumping into a shower only to be hit with icy cold water. If your water heater suddenly stops working, don’t panic, we’ve got you covered. At A&B Heating and Cooling, we help homeowners and business owners throughout Thomaston and Middle Georgia get back up and running quickly when water heater issues strike.
Here’s what to do if your water heater isn’t working, and when it’s time to call in the pros.
1. Check Your Power Source
The first thing to do is determine what kind of water heater you have—gas or electric.
- For electric water heaters, check your circuit breaker box. A tripped breaker could be the culprit. Flip it off and back on, then wait about 30 minutes to see if hot water returns.
- For gas water heaters, check that the pilot light is still lit. If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it, but only if you’re comfortable doing so. If it won’t stay lit, that may indicate a deeper issue.
2. Inspect the Thermostat
Your water heater’s thermostat controls the water temperature. If it’s set too low, your water might not get hot enough. Most experts recommend setting your thermostat to 120 degrees. If the setting looks right but you’re still getting cold water, the thermostat itself may be faulty.
3. Check for Leaks
A leaking water heater tank is a red flag. Look around the base of the unit for puddles or moisture. Leaks can mean anything from a loose valve to a cracked tank, and unfortunately, a cracked tank usually means it’s time for a replacement.
Don’t wait to deal with a leak! Water damage can quickly lead to mold and other costly repairs.
4. Listen for Strange Noises
If your water heater is making popping or rumbling sounds, it could be full of sediment buildup, especially if you have hard water. This buildup can block heating elements and reduce your system’s efficiency, or even cause long-term damage.
5. Know When to Call The Pros
Some problems are quick fixes, but others require a trained professional. If you’ve run through the basics and your water heater still isn’t working, it’s time to call our experts at A&B Heating and Cooling.
